Canada rig count continues to rise

The rig count in Canada ended the week with an additional 13 rigs running. For the week, the rig count in Canada stood at 258.

The rig count in Canada ended the week with an additional 13 rigs running. For the week ended Jan. 31, the rig count in Canada stood at 258, according to Baker Hughes data. There were 12 additional oil-directed rigs working in Canada and 1 additional gas-directed rig, bringing the week’s totals to 186 and 72, respectively.

The total rig count in Canada is up 26 from the 232 rigs working during the same period a year ago.

In the US, 6 additional rigs were running for a total of 582. The count is down 37 from the 619 rigs running in the US during the same period in 2024.

US oil-directed rigs increased by 7 units to 497, down 20 from the same period last year. Gas-directed rigs decreased by 1 to 98. A year ago, 117 units were drilling for gas.

The number of rigs drilling on land in the US was up 7 rigs to 567. 

Three of the major oil and gas producing states saw an increase in rigs. With a 4-rig increase, New Mexico ended the week with 106 rigs working. Oklahoma and North Dakota each added 1 unit to reach respective counts of 45 and 33. 

No state saw a decrease in rigs this week. 

One fewer rig was drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, dropping the overall US offshore count down to 13. The number of rigs drilling in inland waters was unchanged at 2.
