Petrobras begins production from high-capacity FPSO at Buzios7 project offshore Brazil
Petrobras has started crude oil production from its Búzios7 deepwater project offshore southeast Brazil. With Búzios7 on-stream, Búzios oilfield is expected to produce up to 1 MMboe/d in second-half 2025.
The Almirante Tamandaré FPSO (Búzios7), the first high-capacity unit to be installed in the field, began production Feb. 15.
Búzios oilfield lies in pre salt Santos basin in water depth of 1,900-2,200 m. Búzios7, the sixth project commissioned at the field, will be developed through the Almirante Tamandaré FPSO and subsea production system. Fifteen development wells are expected to be put into production, including seven oil producers, six water and gas injectors, one convertible well, and one gas injector.
Petrobras anticipates Búzios will become the company’s largest production field, with the goal of reaching 2 million b/d by 2030.
The FPSO, leased from SBM Offshore, is one of the largest in the world, with a processing capacity of up to 225,000 b/d of oil, 12 million cu m/day of natural gas, with 1.4 million bbl oil storage capacity (OGJ Online, July 27, 2021). It was converted in China in July 2024 and arrived at the oilfield in October 2024. It is equipped with closed flare to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and heat recovery devices to reduce energy consumption.
The Búzios consortium is composed of Petrobras (operator), the Chinese partner companies CNOOC and CNODC, as well as PPSA, the company responsible for managing production-sharing contracts.
