    Giant John Shaw drilling rig to receive upgrades

    Semco Maritime reported it will undertake a 200 million kroner upgrade project for the 85 m-long, 64 m-wide, and 110 m-high John Shaw semisubmersible drilling rig. When complete, the rig will be handed off to operator Transocean Inc.

    Semco Maritime reported it will undertake a 200 million kroner upgrade project for the 85 m-long, 64 m-wide, and 110 m-high John Shaw semisubmersible drilling rig. When complete, the rig will be handed off to operator Transocean Inc.

    Four hundred people are involved in the round-the-clock, 70-80-day project that started upon the rig's arrival at Esbjerg on Jan. 13.

    In preparation, Semco built an access tower at the quay and prefabricated modules and other equipment that will be installed on board the rig.

    Semco will review and replace all of the rig's load-bearing steel structures; refurbish onboard accommodations, including the installation of new bathrooms, modifications, and safety upgrade of rescue equipment; and review and replace all piping and electrical installations.

    Additionally, a team of divers will inspect and repair the underwater parts of the rig; the drilling equipment will be serviced, repaired, and refitted; and the rig's steel construction will be given extensive surface treatment and painting. Photo from Semco Maritime.
