US rig count up 4, Canada rig count falls

The active rig count in the US was up by 4 units for the week ended Feb. 7 with 586 rigs running, according to Baker Hughes data.

The number of working oil-directed rigs in the US increased by 1 unit to 480 for the week. The count is down 19 units year-over-year. Gas-directed rigs increased by 2 units to 100, down 21 units year-over-year. Six rigs considered unclassified remained active during the week, up 1 unit from last week. 

US land-based rigs rose by 3 to 570. Horizontal rigs increased 4 to 523. Directional drilling rigs were unchanged at 50. The vertical rig count also was unchanged with 13 rigs working this week. The number of rigs working offshore increased by 1 unit to 14. 

Louisiana’s rig count increased by 2 units this week to land at 31 working rigs. Texas, Wyoming, Utah, and California each gained a single rig to end the week with counts of 278, 20, 12, and 8, respectively. 

Oklahoma dropped 2 rigs to leave 43 units running this week. 

Canada’s rig count fell by 9 rigs to 249, but the count is up 17 units from this time a year-ago. The number of gas-directed rigs is unchanged at 72 while those drilling for oil decreased by 9 to end the week with 177 units working.
