Woodside Energy Group Ltd. has taken delivery of the final modules for the 5-million tonne/year (tpy) Train 2 of its Pluto LNG plant in Karratha, Western Australia. Pluto LNG is part of Woodside’s offshore Scarborough energy project, which the company described as more than 75% complete, targeting first LNG in 2026.

Scarborough natural gas field, with estimated reserves of 11 tcf, lies in Carnarvon basin about 375 km off the coast of Karratha. The project includes a floating production unit more in 950 m of water, with eight wells drilled in its initial phase and a total of 13 planned over the life of the field. Woodside completed installation of Scarborough’s 433-km export pipeline to Pluto Train 2 earlier this year (OGJ Online, Oct. 11, 2024).

The Pluto expansion also includes new domestic gas infrastructure capable of supplying as much as 225 TJ/day to the Western Australian market. It will bring Pluto LNG’s overall capacity to 8 million tpy.

Woodside on Jan. 1, 2022, selected Bechtel Corp. to execute engineering, procurement, and construction of Pluto Train 2, with work at the Karratha site starting later that year (OGJ Online, Aug. 24, 2022). Since February 2024, Bechtel has delivered 51 modules to Karratha from its fabrication yard in Batam, Indonesia.
