LNG Canada nears startup; commercial operations mid-2025
LNG Canada Development Inc.’s 14-million tonne/year (tpy) LNG plant is nearing completion in Kitimat, BC. Construction work is almost done, and commissioning and startup are set to begin, with commercial operations expected to start by mid-2025.
“We’ve designed a project with the lowest carbon intensity of any large-scale LNG export facility operating today: emissions that are 35% lower than the world’s best performing facilities and 60% lower than the global weighted average,” LNG Canada chief executive officer Jason Klein said last week.
The company has also contracted with HaiSea Marine, a joint venture between the Haisla Nation and North Vancouver-based Seaspan ULC, to provide harbor and escort tugboat services to LNG Canada using battery-powered and low emissions vessels.
Klein went on to say that the LNG Canada joint venture (Shell Canada Energy, 40%; Petronas subsidiary North Montney LNG LP, 25%; PetroChina Canada. Ltd., 15%; Mitsubishi Corp. subsidiary Diamond LNG Canada Ltd.,15%; and Kogas Canada LNG Ltd., 5%) continues to explore a potential 14-million tpy Phase 2 expansion of the plant.
