Union Texas Petrochemicals plans to add another ethylene furnace at its Geismar, La., olefins plant, shown in photo. Also as part of the project, Union Texas will upgrade nine of the plant's 12 existing furnaces. The new furnace will enable the Geismar plant to increase capacity by about 26 million lb/year to about 1.275 billion lb/year. Construction of the new furnace and upgrading of the plant's original nine furnaces are to begin in May 1997 and be completed in February 1999. The new furnace is to start up in fourth quarter 1997. Total project cost is estimated at $27.8 million. ABB Lummus Heat Transfer will handle design and engineering for both projects. Union Texas Petrochemicals is operator and holds a 41.67% interest in the Geismar complex. Remaining interests are held by BASF 41.67% and GE Plastics 16.66%. Photo courtesy Union Texas.
