Another UK refinery has started commercial operations for an adjoining combined heat and power plant.

In its first 3 months, the CHP unit achieved 100% availability for Esso UK Ltd.'s Fawley refinery, according to CHP developer National Power Cogen, a unit of the UK's National Power plc. The CHP plant, comprising a 135-Mw electrical unit and 234-Mw thermal unit, cost £60 million to build. Alstom Gas Turbines supplied a Frame 917E gas turbine for the project from its Belfort works. The turbine exhausts into a supplementary-fired waste-heate recovery boiler, which, when fully fired, can produce over 300 tonnes/hr of steam. The steam is produced at high pressure (HP, 100 bar) and at medium (MP, 25 bar) pressure. In its unfired mode, the waste-heat boiler produces 150 tonnes/hr of HP steam and 65 tonnes/hr of MP steam.
