Bolivia has discovered a large natural gas field north of La Paz, Bolivia’s President Luis Alberto Arce said in a post to an official social media account.

Mayaya Centro X1 field was drilled Nov. 25, 2022, as part of the upstream reactivation plan executed by state-owned Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales Bolivianos (YPFB).

Based on formation tests, the well has confirmed the presence of gaseous and liquid hydrocarbons in the middle and lower Copacabana and Tomachi formations that could hold 1.7 tcf of potential reserves, the largest discovery in the country since 2005.

Mayaya Centro-X1 development will include drilling of an additional three wells and construction of pipelines to export up to 10 million cu m/d of gas and 500-1,000 b/d of liquids. Production could begin in the next 2-3 years.
