Galp Energia discovered hydrocarbons in the Mopane-1A appraisal well in Namibia’s Orange basin.

Galp Energia SGPS SA discovered hydrocarbons in the Mopane-1A appraisal well (Well #3) in block PEL83 in Namibia’s Orange basin.

The well spudded on October 23 as part of the second exploration and appraisal campaign in PEL 83 (OGJ Online, Oct. 28 2024). The well intersected AVO-1 sands.

Mopane-1A encountered light oil and gas-condensate in high quality reservoir-bearing sands, indicating good porosities, high permeabilities, and high pressures, the company said. Oil viscosity is low with minimum CO2 and no H2S. Together with findings from Mopane-1X and Mopane-2X, the appraisal well confirms the extension and quality of AVO-1, Galp said.

The operator and partners will continue to analyze and integrate newly acquired data and will continue progressing exploration and appraisal wells and and a high-resolution proprietary 3D seismic campaign set to start this month.

PEL 83 covers about 10,000 sq km in Orange basin in the southern part of Namibian shallow and deep waters, close to the border with South Africa.

Galp is operator of PEL 83 (80%) with partners National Petroleum Corp. of Namibia (NAMCOR) (10%) and Custos Energy (10%). Sintana has a 49% carried interest through its indirect investment in Custos Energy.
