Petronas awards RINA pre-FEED contract for Malaysian CCS

Dec. 13, 2024
Petronas CCS Solutions awarded RINA a preliminary front-end engineering and design contract to support development of the operator’s carbon capture and storage project in Malaysia.

Petronas CCS Solutions Sdn Bhd has awarded RINA a preliminary front-end engineering and design (pre-FEED) contract to support development of the operator’s carbon capture and storage (CCS) project in Malaysia. The project will capture CO2 from industrial sources and store them in offshore geological formations.

The pre-FEED agreement covers the project’s Northern hub, in Kerteh, and Southern hub, in Kuantan, with RINA responsible for three distinct scopes:

  • Northern hub’s onshore terminal, jetty, and pipeline.
  • Southern hub’s onshore terminal.
  • The project’s offshore pipeline and platform.

Petronas expects the Kuantan hub to begin operations by 2029 (OGJ Online, July 26, 2024).
The CCS project is expected to capture “millions of tonnes” of CO2 annually, according to RINA. Captured CO2 will be stored in depleted oil fields, leveraging Malaysia's natural subsurface structure.

RINA expects the pre-FEED study to be completed by end 2024, execution of the contract having pre-dated the announcement. The scope of work includes developing detailed plans for the infrastructure needed to manage CO2, from its capture at industrial sites to its transportation via pipelines and subsequent storage in depleted offshore reservoirs.
