bp Australia is converting its existing but idled Kwinana refinery, south of Perth on Australia’s west coast, to renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production. The company expects 10,000 b/d of production by 2026.

bp Australia Pty. Ltd. “is progressing with engineering plans” on converting its existing but idled Kwinana refinery, south of Perth on Australia’s west coast, to renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production. The company expects 10,000 b/d of production to start by 2026.

bp will integrate the new biorefinery with the site’s existing import terminal and plans for green hydrogen production, H2Kwinana, currently in feasibility study.

Kwinana is one of five biofuel projects bp has planned globally. It expects these projects to produce around 50,000 b/d of SAF and renewable diesel by 2030.

Last year, bp let a contract to Honeywell UOP to license technology for conversion of idled hydroprocessing equipment at the plant as part of pre-frontend engineering and design (OGJ Online, Feb. 28, 2022).
