US, Canada rig counts little changed

Following 2 straight weeks of steep declines to the rig count in Canada, the week ended Jan. 3, had just one rig withdrawn from operation, according to Baker Hughes.

With 94 rigs running in Canada, the count is down 25% from the 125 units drilling this week a year ago.

In the US, 589 rigs were working for the week, unchanged for the second consecutive week. The count is down 32 units from the 621 rigs working this time a year ago.

Rigs drilling on land in the US totaled 573, unchanged from last week. Offshore units remained unchanged at 14. The number of rigs drilling in inland waters was unchanged at 2.

The number of rigs drilling for oil and the number of rigs drilling for gas changed only slightly week over week, gas adding one rig and oil losing one in the US with respective counts of 103 and 482. The oil-directed rig count is down 19 units from the 501 rigs drilling for oil this week a year ago. The gas-directed rig count is 15 fewer than this time last year. 

Among the major oil and gas-producing states, Texas saw the only increase with a 1-unit gain to hit 285 rigs working for the week. The rig count in Louisiana fell by a single unit to 30 this week.
