The US drilling rig count increased by 4 units to reach 585 rigs working for the week ended July 5, according to Baker Hughes data. The count is down 95 units from the 680 rigs working this time a year ago.
The number of rigs drilling on land was up 2 units week-over-week with a total of 562. The number of rigs drilling offshore was up 2 units to reach 23 rigs working. The number of rigs drilling in inland waters was unchanged at 0.
US oil-directed rigs were unchanged from last week with 479 rigs working. This time a year ago, 540 units were drilling for oil. Rigs targeting gas were up 4 units to 101, 34 fewer than were drilling for gas at this time a year ago.
Of the major oil and gas-producing states, Louisiana saw the largest uptick. A 3-rig increase brought the rig count in the state to 43 for the week.
Texas added a single unit to end the week with 278 rigs running.
Canada’s rig count decreased by 1 unit to 175 rigs drilling for the week. The count breaks even with the year-ago number. At 115 units, Canada’s oil-directed rig count is down a single unit from last week. The gas-directed rig count in Canada increased by 1 rig to 60 rigs running for the week.
