Summary

The Oil & Gas Journal's Worldwide Refinery Survey is a hallmark special report that details plant-by-plant processing and production capacity data for refineries operating across the globe. Widely used as a reference by industry technical staff, operating managers, competitive strategists, executives, consultants, and service providers, the survey data is representative of refinery owners’ direct responses to the survey and Oil & Gas Journal’s independent research.

In recent years, OGJ has been made aware of the growing importance for companies to list their facilities on the survey due to certain agreements these operators maintain (or hope to establish) with crude oil marketing firms and government regulatory agencies. On the commercial side, these agreements may involve an operator’s eligibility to purchase crude feedstock from certain suppliers. On the regulatory side, a refinery’s listed unit capacities in the survey may be used to establish standards and goals governing that plant’s current and future environmental performance.

Since its inception in 1902, OGJ has remained committed to a founding editorial philosophy of fair, honest, accurate, and independent reporting in its coverage of the industry, regardless of the editorial medium. This philosophy governs our reporting of news as much as it does our annual surveys.

As part of our underlying commitment to our editorial philosophy, our industry participants, and our audience, join Robert Brelsford, OGJ’s downstream editor, for a behind-the-scenes look at the worldwide refining survey, where he’ll provide a brief overview of the process, offer tips on completing the survey, and answer operators’ questions related to how they can ensure inclusion of their updated data in the survey by the annual deadline.
