The venture, named Solub, was set up to recommend to the Soviet refining industry formulations of lubricants, with various additives, for use in machinery and other equipment. It will function mainly as a research entity.
"What this essentially will be is an engine evaluation and testing laboratory," a Lubrizol spokesman said. "It will use base stocks produced in the U.S.S.R. and recommend additives for those stocks to be used in Russian built engines." Up to now, Soviet refiners depended on American Petroleum Institute or similar standards.
