Based on a sample taken July 27, 2018, Equinor ASA (formerly Statoil ASA) on Oct. 24, 2018, issued a commercial assay of heavy, medium-sulfur Hebron crude (OGJ Online, Nov. 29, 2017; Jan. 4, 2013).
Discovered in 1980 and estimated to contain more than 700 million bbl in reserves, Hebron lies in 300 ft of water offshore Newfoundland and Labrador in the Jeanne d’Arc basin, more than 200 miles southeast of the capital, St. John’s, and 19 miles southeast of operator ExxonMobil Corp.’s Hibernia project.

Production from the field began in November 2017 from the Hebron platform, a stand-alone, gravity-based structure that supports an integrated topsides deck. The platform is equipped with 1.2 million bbl of oil storage. Crude is shuttled from the platform to Newfoundland Transhipment Terminal at Whiffen Head on the eastern side of the head of Placentia Bay, the same terminal from which Hibernia and Terra Nova crudes also are loaded.
ExxonMobil Canada Properties operates Hebron with 35.5%. Chevron Canada Ltd. holds a 29.6% interest, Suncor Energy Inc. 21%, Equinor Canada Ltd. 9%, and Nalcor Energy-Oil & Gas Inc. 4.9%.
