First gas flows from Senex’s Queensland Atlas expansion
Senex Energy Ltd., Brisbane, has started natural gas flow to the east coast market from its Atlas Queensland expansion.
First gas flows from the Atlas natural gas field expansion follow the official opening of the Surat basin processing plant in Queensland in November 2024, a project delivered with the expansion of Atlas and Roma North gas developments to deliver 60 petajoules/year, representing over 10% of the annual domestic natural gas demand on the east coast.
The company noted advancement of the $1 billion (Aus.) expansion of its Atlas and Roma North natural gas developments in 2024 after more than 18 months on hold due to "unprecedented federal government intervention in the gas market and comprehensive approvals processes," the company said that year. By September 2023, eight long-term, natural gas supply agreements had been signed with Australian manufacturers and energy retailers, and by June 2024, all major approvals to proceed had been received.
Senex Energy chief executive officer Darren Stevenson, noting the processing plant opening in November, said the company had, to date, drilled more than 160 wells and completed construction of the Atlas to Reedy Creek pipeline, and that the first stage of the processing plant was undergoing commissioning.
