QatarEnergy will proceed with a new LNG expansion project, North Field West, to further increase the State of Qatar’s LNG production capacity to 142 million tonnes/year (tpy) before the end of the decade.
The target is an increase of almost 85% from current production levels, the operator said in a release Feb. 25.
During a press conference H.E. Mr. Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, the Minister of State for Energy Affairs, the president and chief executive officer of QatarEnergy, said extensive appraisal drilling and testing have confirmed that productive layers of Qatar’s North Field extend towards the west, which allows for developing a new LNG production project in Ras Laffan.
H.E. Minister Al-Kaabi said gas quantities in North Field are estimated at 240 tcf, which raises the State of Qatar’s gas reserves to more than 2,000 tcf from 1,760 tcf, and the condensates reserves to more than 80 billion bbl from 70 billion bbl, in addition to large quantities of liquefied petroleum gas, ethane, and helium.
H.E. Minister Al-Kaabi said QatarEnergy will immediately begin basic engineering works for the new project as the operator continues work to implement various elements of the North Field production expansion projects, including the North Field East project and the North Field South project.
