NextDecade Corp. has contracted ConocoPhillips for heavies removal unit (HRU) technology for Phase 1 of the Rio Grande LNG project in the Port of Brownsville, Tex.

Phase 1 of the project includes three LNG liquefaction trains for a total production capacity of 17.6 million tonnes/year of LNG, along with a dedicated HRU utilizing ConocoPhillips' OCP CryoSep technology immediately upstream of each train.

The technologies provide targeted recovery and/or removal of heavy hydrocarbons that would otherwise freeze in the liquefaction unit or lead to excessive BTU content in LNG, ConocoPhillips said.

NextDecade took final investment decision on the liquefaction project's first phase in July (OGJ Online, July 13, 2023).
