Woodfibre LNG has received a 5-year extension from the British Columbia Environmental Assessment Office to begin construction on its 2.1-million tonne/year liquefaction plant. The new deadline is Oct. 26, 2025.
The company had hoped to begin construction this summer but filed a request for the extension in March 2020. It attributed the delay in part to the COVID-19 pandemic and said at the time of filing that it instead expected to begin building in summer 2021.
The plant would be built 7 km west-southwest of Squamish, BC, on the site of the former Woodfibre Pulp and Paper Mill. It would include 250,000 cu m of storage.
Complications associated with remediating the paper mill site also played into the delay, as did McDermott International’s January 2020 filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. McDermott was the preferred contractor for the marine portion of the project.
