Cheniere Energy Inc. has produced first LNG from Train 1 of its 10-million tonne/year (tpy) Corpus Christi Stage 3 liquefaction project (CCL Stage 3). Commissioning continues, and Cheniere expects substantial completion of Train 1 by end first-quarter 2025, more than 6 months ahead of the guaranteed completion date.

As of Nov. 30, 2024, overall project completion for CCL Stage 3 was 75.9%, which reflects engineering 96.8% complete, procurement 97.2% complete, subcontract work 87.7% complete and construction 39.2% complete. Upon substantial completion, Bechtel Energy Inc. will transfer care, custody, and control of the completed train to Cheniere.

Full notice to proceed on CCL Stage 3 was issued to Bechtel by Cheniere in 2022 (OGJ Online, June 22, 2022). CCL Stage 3 consists of seven midscale trains and will increase the plant’s overall production to more than 25 million tpy.

Most new LNG production capacity the US Energy Information Administration expects to come online this winter is in the US. In addition to CCL 3, this includes Venture Global Inc.’s 13.3-million tpy Plaquemines LNG Phase 1 (consisting of 18 mid-scale trains), and additional capacity at Freeport LNG Development’s 15.45-million tpy plant achieved through engineering and operational optimization (OGJ Online, Nov. 27, 2024).
