World's largest in-ground LNG tanks installed

March 24, 1997
The largest in-ground LNG storage tanks were completed last year by NKK Corp., Tokyo, at the Negishi terminal of Tokyo Gas Co. Ltd. Storage capacity of each tank is 200,000 kl (approximately 7.1 million cu ft). The tanks are made with 2-mm thick corrugated stainless steel membrane sheets and polyurethane foam thermal insulation panels fitted on the inside of the reinforced concrete tank structure.

Construction also involved NKK's newly developed automatic tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding process. The high-speed rotating arc welding machines were used for welding nearly 80% of the membrane. The 9% nickel steel roof components were prefabricated and assembled at NKK's Tsurumi Works to shorten on-site construction time.
