BP Chemicals Inc. has licensed Indian Petrochemicals Corp. Ltd. (IPCL) to build a new acrylonitrile plant at Jageshwar, Gujarat, India.
Under the agreement, IPCL will build a 100,000 metric ton/year plant based on BP's proprietary fluid bed process, with first production slated for early 2000. BP will also provide catalyst for the plant.
Douglas B. Smith, BP's vice-president of nitriles, said, "We believe the new acrylonitrile plant in India will be the catalyst for growth in demand for derivatives such as acrylic fiber within the country."
BP earlier licensed IPCL to build a 30,000 ton/year acrylonitrile plant and a 160,000 ton/year polyethylene unit at Nagothane, south of Bombay.
IPCL soon will complete expansion of the polyethylene plant to 220,000 tons/year of linear low density and high density polyethylene.
