A unit of Phillips Petroleum Co. is poised for an immediate start on exploration of a 4.5 million acre block in southern Oman. Phillips Petroleum Oman Ltd. will conduct the program under an exploration/production sharing contract covering a 100% interest in Block 36. The tract lies flush with the borders of Saudi Arabia and Yemen and flanks the Rub Al Khali basin of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Phillips Petroleum Oman Ltd. will conduct the program under an exploration/production sharing contract covering a 100% interest in Block 36. The tract lies flush with the borders of Saudi Arabia and Yemen and flanks the Rub Al Khali basin of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
Phillips intends to conduct an aeromagnetic survey by yearend 1996 and begin acquiring seismic data early in 1997. It also is committed to drill five wells during a 9 year exploration phase of its contract.
Phillips will open an office in Muscat in September.
