Costs for six selected equipment items used in refining construction operations have been surveyed for the 3 years, 1996-1998. The accompanying table shows Nelson-Farrar equipment indexes for these items of equipment.

Valves and fittings showed the greatest increases in cost, rising from 1,446.4 in the first quarter of 1996 to 1,526.9 in the last quarter of 1998.

Four other items showed more modest increases. The tanks and pressure vessels category rose from 723.9 to 760.7 during the 36-month span. Non-metallic building materials increased from 700.1 to 737.3. Bubble trays showed an index gain from 1013.9 to 1049.2. Fractionating towers showed a 44-point gain, increasing from 844.4 to 888.7 over the 3-year period

The final category, tube stills, gained no ground during the data compilation period. Beginning index value was 394.5, while the final value was 391.7.
