Indonesian Strike chart (36428 bytes) A group led by a unit of Santa Fe Energy Resources Inc., Houston, has tested an oil and gas discovery on its Jabung block in Central Sumatra, Indonesia.

The 1 North Geragai, the first well drilled by Santa Fe and partners on the 2 million acre tract, flowed at combined rates of 5,100 b/d of oil, 30 MMcfd of gas, and 350 b/d of condensate from several zones.

Santa Fe also sees oil and gas reserve potential in sands that were not tested.

"This well appears to have at least three potentially significant productive intervals," said James L. Payne, Santa Fe chairman and chief executive officer.

One of the well's zones flowed 2,700 b/d of 43 gravity oil and 1.3 MMcfd of gas through a 32/64 in. choke from perforations at 5,300-33 ft.

Another zone, perforated at 4,100-70 ft, showed "exceptional productivity" by flowing 9.1 MMcfd of gas and 150 b/d of condensate through a 40/64 in. choke with 1,267 psi flowing tubing pressure. Calculated absolute open flow for this zone is 325 MMcfd.

Plans call for tests of more zones in the well and delineation drilling of the North Geragai structure this year. An exploration program will see the start of drilling next month on the group's Northeast Betara prospect, about 25 miles northwest of North Geragai.

The nearest shipping point for oil is on the coast of the Java Sea, about 12 miles north of North Geragai. Two gas pipelines are planned to traverse the area, the first scheduled for completion in 1997.

Santa Fe's wholly owned Santa Fe Energy Resources Southeast Asia operates the Jabung block. Its partners are Anadarko Indonesia Co. Jabung and Kerr-McGee Sumatra Ltd. Each holds a one-third interest.
