Five companies have asked Canada's National Energy Board for permits to export about 300 bcf of Canadian gas to the U.S. for terms from 2 to 16 years.

Applicants for permits are Altresco Pittsfield LP, Pittsfield, Mass., Enron Capital & Trade Resources Corp., Houston, and Crestar Energy Inc., Husky Oil Operations Ltd., and Morgan Hydrocarbons Inc., all of Calgary.

Environmental groups will oppose the applications because of legal issues and concerns over prices and long term gas supplies for Canadians.

Mike Sawyer, spokesman for the Rocky Mountain Ecosystem, charged that Canadian companies are subsidizing U.S. consumers by selling gas below replacement cost.

Industry analysts said there is no shortage of gas, and Alberta, Canada's No. 1 gas producer, has a surplus.
