Amoco (U.K.) Exploration Co. Ltd. has taken the Transocean 8 semisubmersible rig under contract to drill a wildcat in the U.K.'s West of Shetlands play about midyear.
The company plans to drill a well on Block 208/15 to test its Newton prospect. An optional second well on another Amoco operated license may also be drilled by the rig this year.
Amoco is one of the leading acreage holders in the West of Shetlands area with 11 operatorships and one nonoperated interest. The latter is the Clair discovery, where BP Exploration Operating Co. Ltd. is operator.
Amoco said an extended well test will take place in Clair field this summer. Clair is believed to hold more than 4 billion bbl of oil in place, although only 150-300 million bbl is thought to be recoverable because of reservoir complexity (OGJ, June 20, 1994, p. 16).
Amoco conducted a joint seismic survey of Block 206/3a, just northwest of Clair, with Shell U.K. Ltd. during 1994. Amoco said results are being interpreted with a view to drilling in 1995 or 1996.
