Talisman Energy Inc., Calgary, plans to drill a Paleozoic test below usual Triassic objectives in the Monkman area of Northeast British Columbia this fall.

The test, to be drilled at an undisclosed location in Talisman's core area at Monkman, is projected to Permian Belcourt at about 4,400 m. Talisman has secured a large land holding of rights below Triassic in the area.

Talisman said a previous Shell Canada Ltd.-Esso Resources Canada Ltd. well on the east side of the core area went to about 5,000 m and tested gas. Permian potential in the area is thought large, it added.

Meanwhile, Talisman plans to keep three rigs drilling at Monkman the rest of this year and in 1995, drilling eight to 10 wells in 1994.

The company called its latest Triassic completion at Monkman a "striking drilling success ... one of the best wells we have ever drilled." The Talisman et al.

Brazion a-88-H/93-O-8 penetrated a new structure in the northwestern part of the trend (see map, OGJ, Oct. 5, 1992, p. 25).

Talisman opened the well at the rate of 73 MMcfd of gas on initial tests and said it is capable of higher rates. Surface pressure built back up in 5 min, Talisman said, without disclosing pressure data. Acid gas content was about 10%. The well encountered 462 ft of total pay in Triassic. It is expected to go on production in 1995 or 1996 at 40-60 MMcfd after construction of a pipeline, Talisman said.

The well reached TD of 7,440 ft in 43 days at a drilling and construction cost of $4.3 million. Interests are Talisman 60%, Ocelot Energy Inc. 32%, and Numac Energy Inc. 8%.

The well is Talisman's fourth in the area this year. As of late July another Talisman well had reached TD and a third was drilling. Ocelot plans to participate in 10-12 wells in the region in the next 18 months, including six to seven in 1994.
