The American Gas Association reports natural gas vehicle refueling stations in the U.S. are approaching the 1,000 mark.
AGA's latest directory of stations listed more than 900 in operation and 100 about to open.
The total is up 32% from the time AGA's last directory was published in April 1993. The new directory shows gas refueling stations are being added at the rate of three or four/week.
AGA said 46 of the Lower 48 states and the District of Columbia have at least one station each. California has the most with 109, followed by Texas with 75, Utah 48, Oklahoma 42, and Pennsylvania and Colorado 40 each.
About 550 of the operational stations, almost 60%, are open to the public or available by arrangement with the operator. Utilities own 579 of the stations, governments about 100, and private companies another 179.
AGA said nearly 90% of the natural gas utilities responding to a survey reported they provide incentives for new natural gas vehicles or conversions of vehicles to natural gas.
