International Petroleum Corp., Dubai, has drilled a step-out on its block off Malaysia that tested gas at a combined rate of more than 70 MMcfd.
IPC's 1 East Bunga Orkid, the fifth exploratory well on Block PM-3 in the Malay basin off peninsular Malaysia, flowed on three drillstem tests at a combined rate of 68.5 MMcfd of gas and 1,079 b/d of condensate through restricted chokes. A fourth drillstem test flowed 1,464 b/d of 38 gravity crude oil and 1.57 MMcfd of associated gas through an 18/64 in. choke.
All four tests were carried out in the J formation over seven intervals totaling 431 ft. The tests proved at least 35 ft of net oil pay and 360 ft of net gas pay. Other pay zones identified on electric logs were not tested but also are considered productive. The well was drilled to 10,500 ft.
Two other wells have been drilled on the Bunga Orkid structure, the 1 Bunga Orkid oil and gas discovery well and the first step-out, 2 Bunga Orkid, which found no commercial hydrocarbons. The 1 Bunga Orkid flowed at a combined rate of 4,971 b/d of oil and condensate and 47.1 MMcfd of gas from six zones at 7,000-9,600 ft.
IPC's 1 Bunga Pakma, on a nearby apparent separate structure, also found oil and gas. It flowed 62.9 MMcfd of gas and 1,120 b/d of condensate from pay at 6,200-10,700 ft. An earlier, unnamed well apparently found natural gas in the northwest corner of the block.
EXPLORATORY WELL SLATED
Meantime, IPC expected to spud by last week 1 Bunga Kekwa step-out on the northern extension of the Bunga Raya/Kekwa structure, also on Block PM-3. The well is projected to 8,500 ft.
An earlier well on the structure, 1 Bunga Raya, flowed 5,409 b/d of crude oil and 3 MMcfd of gas from a J formation zone. Four zones in all flowed at a combined rate of 41.6 MMcfd of gas and 5,719 b/d of liquids.
Operator IPC holds a 41.44% interest in the block in partnership with Petronas Caligari Sdn. Bhd. 58-56%, the upstream unit of Malaysia's state petroleum company.
The joint venture has obtained an extension of the block's original exploration period to February 1993 in order to establish commerciality on the block.
