TotalEnergies EP South Africa BV will withdraw from Block 11B/12B off the Southern coast of South Africa.

The company entered Block 11B/12B in 2013 and made two gas discoveries, Brulpadda and Luiperd. These discoveries could not be turned into a commercial development as it appeared to be too challenging to economically develop and monetize for the South African market, the company said.

TotalEnergies decision to withdraw follows joint venture partner CNR International (South Africa) Ltd.’s notice to withdraw its participation on July 1, 2024 (OGJ Online, July 1, 2024).

TotalEnergies is currently operator in Block 11B/12B (45%) with joint venture partners Qatar Petroleum (25%), CNR International (20%), and Main Street 1549 (10%). Africa Energy Corp. which holds 49% of the shares in Main Street 1549.

TotalEnergies has also exited from offshore exploration Block 5/6/7 where TotalEnergies EP South Africa currently holds 40% interest.
