CIT elects Thain chairman, CEO

CIT Group Inc. has elected John A. Thain to serve as chairman and CEO.
ThainCIT Group Inc. has elected John A. Thain to serve as chairman and CEO. Thain replaces Peter J. Tobin, who has been acting as interim CEO. Tobin will remain a director of CIT. Thain previously served as chairman and CEO of Merrill Lynch until its sale to Bank of America. Prior to that, Thain held the position of CEO of the New York Stock Exchange. Thain spent the majority of his career at Goldman Sachs Group, where he rose to president and COO. He received a bachelor's degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and an MBA from Harvard University.

Apache promotes French to VP, business development

FrenchApache Corp. has named David French vice president - business development. French joined Apache in 2005 as director of purchasing, EH&S, and general services. Most recently, he held the position of region production manager - west for Apache Canada in Calgary. Prior to joining Apache, he was an associate principal at McKinsey & Co. and held planning and operations engineering roles at Amoco. He holds a bachelor's degree from Rice University and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Kennedy to head capital markets activities at TPH

KennedyHouston-based Tudor, Pickering, Holt & Co. Securities Inc. has hired John G. Kennedy, III to fill the newly-created position of managing director and head of capital markets. He will work closely with the firm's securities and investment banking divisions to help drive the firm's growing role in capital markets activities in the energy sector. Kennedy has over 25 years of experience in the capital markets business. Previously, he worked with Deutsche Bank in its Equity Capital Markets Group in New York, and with DLJ, Kidder Peabody, and Merrill Lynch in similar capacities. Kennedy earned a bachelor's degree from Washington and Lee University and an MBA from The Amos Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College.

Jackson Walker welcomes two new attorneys to Houston

Law firm Jackson Walker has added two new partners, Amy Baird and Tré Fischer, to the firm's Houston office. Baird represents clients in the energy industry. She does complex commercial and mass toxic tort litigation, along with regulatory, transactional and project acquisition work for clients in Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Mississippi. She also handles general contract and complex commercial litigation and mass toxic tort litigation. Prior to joining private practice, Baird served as in-house counsel for Southern Natural Gas Co. She received her bachelor's degree and her JD degree from the University of Alabama. Joseph "Tré" August Fischer, III has experience with environmental liabilities and contaminated properties and the management, litigation, and resolution of environmental issues and natural resource damages claims involving regulatory agencies and private parties. He has experience in transaction structuring, negotiation and documentation and in environmental risk management and remediation. Fischer has served as vice president and deputy general counsel for TRC Cos. Inc. and assistant general counsel for Kaiser Aluminum. He received his bachelor's degree from Rice University. He performed graduate work at Vanderbilt University, and earned his JD from the University of Houston.

Madison Williams promotes Lane to managing director

LaneMadison Williams has promoted Robert Lane to managing director in the investment banking firms' oil and gas practice, based in Houston. Lane has experience in strategic opportunities in the midstream sector. He has over 15 years' experience in corporate finance, capital raising, advisory services, and senior management in the energy and related services industries. Lane joined Madison Williams' predecessor firm in 2004 as a senior member of the SMH Capital Equity Research Group, where he covered master limited partnerships and other midstream companies as well as alternative energy firms. He joined the company's investment banking practice in January 2008. Prior to 2004, Lane was the CFO of Unico Corp. He has also held positions with Vulcan Capital Management, and Smith Barney. He holds an MBA from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and a bachelor's degree from Princeton University.

Mayer Brown adds Valera to energy practice

ValeraMayer Brown, a global law firm, has hired Jose L. Valera to join its Houston office as a partner in the Corporate & Securities practice. Valera focuses his practice on domestic and international energy transactions, and has more than 25 years of legal experience representing oil, gas and electric energy companies throughout the US, Central America, South America, the Caribbean, Africa, and Asia. A native of Peru, he earned a JD from the Catholic University of Peru and also earned a JD from the South Texas College of Law in Houston.

New president, COO joins Zion Oil & Gas

William L. Ottaviani has joined Zion Oil & Gas as president and COO. Ottaviani has spent 25 years working for Chevron Corp. in various countries, including Angola, Indonesia and the USA, and two years as COO of Rex Energy. He earned an MBA from California State University and a bachelor's degree from Pennsylvania State University. When working for Chevron's subsidiary, Caltex Pacific Indonesia, he was awarded the President's Award for his work in negotiating a $1.5 billion gas contract.

Endeavour International names James Emme VP, North America

Endeavour International Corp. has appointed James J. Emme executive vice president - North America to lead the company's expanding asset base and activities in the US. Emme will be based in Denver, Colo. where the company will build a technical and commercial team focused on its growing portfolio of domestic resource plays. Emme spent more than 20 years with Anadarko where he served as worldwide vice president of exploration and business development and headed the company's Canadian operations. He most recently served as senior vice president of exploration for Max Petroleum and was president and COO for Elk Resources.

Foehr to succeed Humphrey as Chevron comptroller

Chevron Corp. has named Matthew J. Foehr as corporate vice president and comptroller, effective April 1. Foehr succeeds Mark A. Humphrey, who is retiring from the position after 34 years with the company. In his new role, Foehr's responsibilities will encompass corporate-wide accounting, financial reporting and analysis, and internal controls. Foehr, who is currently vice president of finance for Chevron's Global Upstream and Gas business, will also oversee Finance Shared Services. Foehr joined Chevron in 1982 on the company's MBA Development Program and has held positions of increasing responsibility in the corporation's comptroller, investor relations and treasury departments. Foehr also has held senior finance positions in the company's upstream exploration and production organization, as well as Chevron's downstream refining, retail marketing and credit card operations. Humphrey has been corporate vice president and comptroller since 2005. He joined the company in 1976.

Multi-Chem promotes Patel to director of CAPEX, flow assurance

Multi-Chem, a global provider of oilfield production chemicals, has promoted Dr. Zubin Patel to director of capital expenditure and flow assurance. Based in the company's West Houston office, Patel will work with Multi-Chem's teams to develop and execute strategies for the deepwater flow assurance market for both existing assets and future CAPEX projects. He received a bachelor's degree from Midwestern State University and a PhD from the University of Southern California. Before joining Multi-Chem in 2008, Patel worked for another production chemical company as Hydrate Group Leader and Manager of Flow Assurance research.

WellPoint names new CFO

WellPoint has appointed Hervé Séguin as the company's CFO. Séguin has over 15 years of experience as a CFO for public Canadian companies. Prior to joining the company, he served as CFO and corporate secretary for Certicom Corp., CFO of InfoCast Corp., and vice president, finance and CFO of Promis Systems Corp. Ltd. Bharat Mahajan, who has served as CFO since July, 2008, stepped down as CFO February 1, 2010.

McDermott Will & Emery adds energy lawyers to Houston office

McDermott Will & Emery LLP has hired Blake H. Winburne as a partner in the Energy & Commodities Advisory Practice Group, residing in the firm's Houston office. Winburne is a transactional lawyer in the downstream and midstream energy sectors, with experience in transactions involving electric power and renewable energy projects and oil, natural gas and refined products infrastructure. Joining Winburne at McDermott are partner Matt Archer and associates Brad Gathright and Kimberly Glasspool. All four were formerly in the Houston office of Baker Botts LLP, where Winburne and Archer were partners. These newest members of McDermott's energy and commodities team represent private equity funds, multinational energy companies, project developers and sponsors, investment banks, and other investors and capital providers in a wide range of transactions.

As Aztec CEO retires, company abolishes position

Franklin C. Fisher, Jr. has retired as the CEO, chairman, and a director of Aztec Oil & Gas Inc. He has been retained by the company as senior strategy consultant, a non-executive position. In addition, Ariane E. Cox has been elected to the position of vice president and secretary/treasurer, replacing Kathryn Parks. The board of directors has elected Dayton F. Wheeler to replace Fisher as a director. Wheeler holds an MBA and is employed by a division of NCR Corp. Waylan R. Johnson, president of Aztec, will assume the duties formerly assigned to the CEO, and the positions of chairman and CEO will be abolished.

Tethys promotes Wall to COO

Tethys Petroleum Ltd. has promoted Graham Wall to COO of the Tethys Petroleum Group of companies. He previously served as vice president, technical. He will lead an operations team which will be responsible for all operational activities including production, reservoir engineering and development, field planning, drilling and production operations, production geology and well testing. Wall holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Wales, UK.

New CFO to take reins at TGS-NOPEC

TGS-NOPEC Geophysical Co. (TGS), a provider of global geoscience data products and services to the oil and gas industry, has appointed Kristian Johansen as the company's new CFO. The appointment will become effective at a date still to be announced. Most recently, Johansen was the executive vice president and CFO of EDB Business Partner in Oslo, a large IT group in the Nordic region. He also has experience in the construction, banking, and oil industries. Johansen earned his undergraduate and masters degrees from the University of New Mexico in 1998 and 1999. TGS' current CFO, Arne Helland, will continue in his role until May 1, 2010.

Leadership transition at EQT

David L. Porges has been named CEO as Murray S. Gerber, chairman and CEO, hands over the reigns at EQT Corp., the Pittsburgh-based energy company, in April. Porges currently serves at the company's president and COO. Gerber will remain as executive chairman through its next annual meeting in April 2011. Gerber was hired as CEO in June 1998. Porges started with the company in 1998 as CFO. EQT has transformed itself from a regional utility to the largest natural gas producer in the Appalachian Basin. Porges has been a member of the EQT board of directors since 2002. Before joining EQT, Porges held various management positions with Exxon and then spent over a decade with Bankers Trust Corp. in a variety of financing and advisory roles, all of which involved the energy industry. He holds an MBA from Stanford and a bachelor's degree from Northwestern University.

Enterprise names Hurley senior VP, crude oil, offshore

Mark A. Hurley has joined Enterprise Products Partners LP as senior vice president of the partnership's Crude Oil & Offshore business unit. He will be responsible for all commercial aspects of Enterprise's network of onshore and offshore crude oil transportation and storage assets, as well as the partnership's offshore crude oil and natural gas pipelines. From 2005 through 2009, Hurley served as president of Shell Pipeline Co. A career Shell employee, he has held numerous key leadership positions in refinery and lubricant plant operations, marketing sales, product supply and trading, with both domestic and global responsibilities, during his 29-year tenure. Hurley earned his bachelor's degree from North Carolina State University.

Smith takes president, CEO role at Quantum Resources Management

Alan Smith has accepted the role of president and CEO of Quantum Resources Management LLC, the management company in charge of running Quantum Resources LP. With the appointment, Smith moves back to the exploration and production/operating side of the business. Smith has experience in petroleum engineering and field operations, as well as commercial and leadership skills gained from his prior experience with Chalker Energy Partners, Ocean Energy, Burlington Resources, Ryder Scott Co., and ARCO Oil and Gas Co. He has been associated with Quantum since 2003 when Quantum funded his start-up company Chalker, where he served as president and CEO. Upon selling Chalker in 2006, he joined Quantum.

Boothby adds chairman,president to Newfield roles

Newfield Exploration Co. has elected Lee K. Boothby to the additional role of chairman of the board, effective upon his re-election at the annual stockholders' meeting on May 7. Boothby succeeds David A. Trice, current chairman and past president and CEO, who had previously agreed to serve a one-year term as non-executive chairman until the company's 2010 annual meeting of stockholders. Boothby joined Newfield in 1999. Prior to his current role as president and CEO, he served as senior vice president - acquisitions and business development from October 2007 - February 2009. Prior to joining Newfield, Boothby worked for Cockrell Oil Corp., British Gas and Tenneco Oil Co. He holds a degree from Louisiana State University and an MBA from Rice University. Philip J. Burguieres was named Newfield's independent lead director, effective May 7, 2010, upon his re-election to the board. He has served on Newfield's board since 1998 and serves as chairman of the Nominating & Corporate Governance Committee and a member of the Compensation & Management Development Committee. He currently serves as chairman and CEO of EMC Holdings LLC, chairman emeritus of Weatherford International Inc., and as a director of FMC Technologies Inc.
