Greenland

GronArctic, Calgary, abandoned a wildcat as a dry hole in western Greenland.

The company said the test was drilled to 9,829 ft through several sand formations but produced no oil on drillstem tests.

GronArctic said no further drilling can be done in 1996 and a rig is being returned to Canada. It said it is discussing plans with several other companies for a one to three well program in 1997.

Queensland

The Santos led southwest Queensland joint venture gauged an oil and gas discovery in Permit ATP259P in the Cooper/Eromanga basin.

The Chiron 1 flowed 7.18 Mmcfd of gas on a 1/2 in. choke from Permian Patcha-warra and 463 b/d of oil with associated gas on a 1 in. choke from shallower Permian Epsilon.

The discovery is 14 km south-southeast of Stokes gas field and 10 km southeast of Brumby gas field.

Newfoundland

Three partners in the Hibernia and Terra Nova oil developments off Newfoundland agreed to spend an additional $125.5 million (Canadian) for exploratory drilling on the Grand Banks.

PetroCanada Ltd., Chevron Canada Ltd. and Mobil Oil Canada Ltd. will operate the exploratory program over the next 5 years in the Grand Banks area. Amoco Canada Petroleum Ltd., Calgary, said in 1995 it will spend $90 million on drilling in the same area. It is expected to start drilling in 1997.

Meanwhile, Mobil, Newfoundland Hunt Oil, and PanCanadian Petroleum Ltd. will drill tests on three parcels of land off western Newfoundland. Mobil said the drilling is part of a corporate plan to develop a new core area off Canada's East Coast.

The companies have drilled and abandoned several tests off western Newfoundland.

Hibernia field on the Grand Banks is expected to go on production in December 1997.

Mobil, PetroCanada, and Chevron are the major partners in the 615 million bbl field. They are also partners in 400 million bbl Terra Nova field, to be developed after Hibernia begins production.

Papua New Guinea

Chevron Niugini's Moran 1X wildcat flowed 1,910 b/d of 44° gravity light, sweet crude with 4.09 MMcfd of associated gas from lowermost Cretaceous Digimu sandstone.

The Moran structure is 11 km north of the Agogo production facility in the Kutubu development. Oil from Moran could readily be piped to existing Kutubu processing and export facilities.

The well was being sidetracked to further evaluate the structure.

Alabama

Bridwell Oil Management of Alabama LLC, Wichita Falls, Tex., completed a Jurassic Norphlet discovery in Monroe County.

The 1 Manning, in 26-6n-7e, flowed 249 b/d of 47° gravity oil with 426 Mcfd of gas from 12,156-161 ft, reports Southeastern Oil Review, Jackson. The discovery is 1 mile northeast of North Excel oil field.

Kansas

KanMap Inc., Independence, Kan., staked six wildcats targeting coalbed methane in Montgomery County.

Objective of the locations, in 5-, 17-, and 20-33s-16e, just south of Independence, is Pennsylvanian Weir-Riverton coalbeds at 1,150 ft, PI reported.

Louisiana

Vastar Resources Inc., Houston, plans to step up Cretaceous Hosston development in DeSoto Parish.

It acquired Kerr-McGee Corp.'s interests in Spider and Logansport fields for $12.1 million. Vastar estimates proved developed reserves at 16.8 bcf of gas equivalent and proved undeveloped reserves at 8 bcf of gas equivalent.

The properties are next to existing Vastar production in the East Texas basin and bring its net production in the area to about 35 MMcfd of gas equivalent.

Nevada

MKJ Xploration Inc., Metairie, La., received a permit to drill a rank wildcat in Nye County.

The 1 Whipple Cave-Federal, in 16-8n-62e, is projected to 7,000 ft. Primary objective is oil in Devonian Guilmette dolomite. Secondary objectives are Pennsylvanian Ely limestone and Mississippian Scotty Wash sandstone.

The prospect was developed with more than 40 miles of multifold seismic, two gravity surveys, and three geochemical evaluations.

The location is in the White River Valley basin 24 miles east of Railroad Valley oil fields.

New Mexico

Mallon Oil Co., Denver, said its 15 Federal 34 well in Northwest Lea field of Lea County is completed from a new Brushy Canyon zone in Permian Delaware.

Initial production of 145 b/d of oil, 66 Mcfd of gas, and 142 b/d of water. That changed after 3 weeks to 90 b/d of oil, 45 Mcfd of gas, and 325 b/d of water.

The well is Mallon's first of 13 to be completed in lower Brushy Canyon at about 8,100 ft. Mallon's other wells in the area produce from Cherry Canyon and/or middle Brushy Canyon zones.

Electric logs and other tools suggest that the well's primary targets, a series of Cherry Canyon and Brushy Canyon zones at 5,700-6,800 ft, will also be productive in the well. Mallon plans to complete the zones and combine production with lower Brushy Canyon soon.

Tennessee

Tennessee Gas & Oil, Livingston, completed an Ordovician Stones River discovery in Overton County.

The 1 Smith, 15-1s-51e, Permit 9021, 1 mile northeast of Miller Mountain oil field, flowed 23 bbl/hr of 38-40° gravity oil from zones at 1,575-90 ft and 1,684-90 ft. The company used 2D seismic and synthetic sonic profiling to pick the location.

Texas

West

Pittencrieff America Inc., Abilene, established 5,300-ft oil and gas production in 975 acre West Fort Chadbourne (Gray sand) Unit of Coke County and is evaluating more locations for drilling or recompletion.

It recompleted the 25 Unit pumping 175 b/d of oil and 52 b/d of water with 175 Mcfd of gas and the 19 Unit pumping 273 b/d of oil and 253 b/d of water with 240 Mcfd of gas.
