Chevron has signed an association contract with Empresa Colombiana de Petroleos (Ecopetrol) to explore Galeron Block, covering more than 166,000 acres, 70 miles east-northeast of Bogota.

Block is adjacent to giant Cusiana oil field and on trend with 1993-95 Florena, Pauto Sur, and Volcanera discoveries, Chevron said.

Work will be carried out by Chevron Latinoamerica SA, Chevron's unit responsible for upstream operations in South America.

During the exploration phase, Chevron will hold a 100% interest in Galeron Block and plans a seismic program beginning in 1997.

Following acquisition and interpretation of geologic and seismic data, the company then will determine possible drilling plans.

Rio Blanco, Cubarral work

Chevron has other operations in Rio Blanco and Cubarral blocks in Colombia.

Chevron and partner Overseas Petroleum & Investment Corp., Taiwan, are continuing exploration begun in 1995 on Rio Blanco Block in the southern Llanos foothills. In May 1996, the partners plugged and abandoned 1 Anaconda sidetrack after three zones tested only minor shows (OGJ, July 15, p. 40).

Chevron also holds a 50% interest in about 34,000 b/d of oil from Castilla and Chichimene fields on Cubarral Block, which it operates on behalf of itself and Ecopetrol.
