Clayton Williams Jr. Inc., Midland, Tex., has completed a horizontal well in Pearsall field, La Salle County, Tex., that is claimed to have set several world records. The 1 Wintershall Storey was drilled to 15,569 ft measured depth late last December, bottoming in Cretaceous Austin chalk. Smith International Inc., Houston, provided engineering and horizontal drilling services and said the well's horizontal displacement is 7,332 ft with true vertical depth of 8,588 ft.

Smith said the well has the longest horizontal displacement of any medium radius horizontal well in the world and the second longest horizontal displacement of any horizontal well. Smith also said it sets a world record for the longest displacement in a horizontal well with a hole size less than 8-1/2 in. And, Smith added, a single bit drilled 7,512) ft, another world record for a horizontal well.

Tested Jan. 14, 1 Wintershall Storey flowed 1,242 b/d of oil, 914 Mcfd of gas, and 219 b/d of water through a 1/2 in. choke with 450 psi flowing tubing pressure from an open hole chalk interval at 8,498-15,569 ft.
