Oct. 10, 1994
Chevron U.K. Ltd. produced its 1 billionth bbl of oil from Ninian field in the U.K. North Sea the morning of Oct. 2. "Only two other U.K. fields, Brent and Forties, have reached this milestone," said Charles Smith, Chevron U.K. managing director. "Ninian now ranks as the first Chevron operated field outside the U.S. to have surpassed the billion mark." Ninian, which began production in December 1978, is estimated to have contained about 2.5 billion bbl of oil.

Declining field economics have been transformed by satellite developments of nearby Lyell, Staffa, and Strathspey fields for third parties.

"We believe Ninian's future lies in attracting and securing additional third party business,' said Syd Abbott, Chevron's northern North Sea business manager.

"With careful reservoir management, Ninian will remain economically viable well beyond 2000."

Chevron last year said four more satellites, with reserves amounting to 100 million bbl of oil, also will be developed as Ninian satellites (OGJ, Dec. 13, 1993, p. 24).
