Africa Energy granted report submission extension for block offshore South Africa
Africa Energy Corp., Vancouver, obtained a deadline extension to May 19, 2025, to submit an environmental impact assessment report (EIAR) regarding Block 11B/12B, offshore South Africa.
The company is assessing the “best way forward” for the application process considering the recent withdrawal of joint venture partners. TotalEnergies EP South Africa BV’s withdrawal came weeks after that of former joint venture partner CNR International (South Africa) Ltd. (OGJ Online, July 29, 2024; July 1, 2024). TotalEnergies had served as operator with 45% interest.
Approval of the production right application will not occur until after the Block 11B/12B joint venture receives environmental authorization in respect to the EIAR.
Block 11B/12B lies in Outeniqua basin and covers an area of about 19,000 sq km with water depths of 200-1,800 m. The Paddavissie fairway in the southwest corner of the block now includes both Brulpadda and Luiperd discoveries.
Africa Energy holds interest in the block through its investment in Main Street 1549 Pty Ltd., and does not intend to withdraw, it said.
The withdrawal of the joint venture partners is subject to relevant regulatory approvals by South African authorities. Subject to all relevant regulatory approvals, Main Street 1549 Pty Ltd. expects to hold 100% interest in the block.
Qatar Petroleum holds 25% and CNR International 20%. Africa Energy Corp. holds 49% of the shares in Main Street 1549, which has a 10% participating interest in Block 11B/12B.
