Chevron Australia and Woodside Energy have entered long-term domestic gas agreements to supply the Worsley Alumina joint venture with a total of 100 petajoules of gas sourced from their Wheatstone, Pluto, Gorgon, and NWS fields off Western Australia.

Perth-based Chevron Australia and Woodside Energy Ltd. have entered long-term domestic gas agreements to supply the Worsley Alumina joint venture south of Perth with a total of 100 petajoules of gas sourced from their Wheatstone, Pluto, Gorgon, and North West Shelf fields off Western Australia.

The gas will be transported via the Dampier-to-Bunbury trunk line.

Chevron will supply 60 petajoules while Woodside will supply 40 petajoules to the Worsley Alumina integrated mining and refining complex.

The Worsley project comprises a bauxite mine at Boddington 130 km south of Perth, a 50-km conveyor that transports the mined ore further south to a refinery near Collie to produce alumina. The alumina powder is then railed to the nearby port of Bunbury for shipment to overseas aluminum smelters.

The offshore gas will be used to generate power for the project.

The Worsley Alumina JV is operated by South32, a Perth-based global mining and metals company that was spun off from BHP Billiton in May 2015. South32 has 86% of the JV; Japan Alumina Associates has 10% and Sojitz has 4%.
