Mubadala Energy makes second gas discovery offshore Indonesia
Mubadala Energy, Abu Dhabi, UAE, has discovered gas from the Tangkulo-1 exploration well, drilled on the South Andaman license, about 65 km offshore North Sumatra, Indonesia.
Coupled with the company’s Layaran-1 gas discovery in December 2023, also in South Andaman, the discovery unlocks "further potential in the southern part of the block," indicating "an additional multi-tcf of prospective gas resource in nearby structures," the company said in a release May 13 (OGJ Online, Dec. 19, 2023).
Tangkulo-1 was drilled to a depth of 3,400 m in 1,200 m water depth. The well encountered 80 m of gas column in a good quality Oligocene sandstone reservoir confirmed through an extensive data gathering campaign that includes obtaining a full core of 72 m, wireline logging, sidewall core, pressure and fluid sampling. Utilizing a new drill stem test (DST) design, the well flowed 47 MMscfd of excellent gas quality and 1,300 bbl of condensate, the company continued.
Testing was constrained by testing facilities, the company said, but the estimated well capacity is 80-100 MMscfd and over 2,000 bbl of condensate.
Mubadala Energy is operator of the South Andaman license with 80% interest. Harbour Energy holds the remaining 20%.
The rig will now move to appraise the Layaran discovery, marking the final well of this exploration and appraisal campaign.
