LONDON, Apr. 15 -- GDF Suez has tested 32 MMcfd of gas from the Cygnus 44/12a-4 appraisal well in the Rotliegendes Leman reservoir of the UK southern North Sea.

The well, which reached a TD of 12,284 ft, extends the productive area of the field to the east. Gross recoverable reserves from the eastern portion are estimated to hold more than 500 bcf. Cygnus field is spread over two UK blocks, 44/11a and 12a.

"This number is expected to increase as additional fault blocks are drilled," said Endeavour International Corp., a 12.5% partner in the field.

The field's appraisal results "surpassed" expectations, said William L. Transier, chairman and chief executive officer of Endeavour.

"We believe the area will prove to be one of the largest natural gas fields to be discovered in the southern gas basin in the last decade," Transier said.

First-phase production from Cygnus field is expected to start in fourth-quarter 2010.

Venture Production PLC is the third partner in Cygnus.
