Shell plc is evaluating its Selene exploration prospect through logging and fluid sampling following encouraging initial evaluations in an exploration well, said license partner Deltic Energy PLC (25%) in an Oct. 21 release.

Well 48/8b-3, in the P2437 license area, UK Southern North Sea, was spudded on July 30 and reached 3,540 m TD on Oct. 17. The prospect encountered a 160-m thick section of Leman sandstone with gas present throughout. If tests are successful, Shell will proceed directly to field development planning as further appraisal drilling is not considered to be necessary to support a future development investment decision, Deltic said.

The Selene gas prospect is considered one of the largest unappraised structures in the Leman Sandstone fairway of Southern Gas basin. Selene joint venture partners estimate the prospect to contain gross P50 prospective resources of 318 bcf of gas (with a P90-P10 range of 132-581 bcf) with a 70% geological chance of success (OGJ Online, July 30, 2024).
