CNOOC Ltd. performed a record gas test in a Mesozoic buried hill in Longkou 7-1 oilfield in eastern Bohai Bay.
Discovery well LK7-1-1 was drilled in 26 m of water and completed at a depth of about 4,400 m. The well encountered a total of 76 m oil and gas pay zones. The well was tested to produce about 210 cu m/d of crude oil and nearly one million cu m/d of natural gas, a new record for gas tested in Bohai Bay, the company said in a release July 15.
In recent years, CNOOC has continued to make new discoveries in metamorphic buried hills medium-to-deep plays in Bohai Bay, said Xu Changgui, deputy chief exploration officer, CNOOC. "The successful well demonstrates the broad exploration prospect in Mesozoic volcanic rocks in Bohai Bay," he said. The work highlights the company's technological progress in tapping resources in medium-to-deep plays that will guide exploration in similar plays offshore China, he said.
