Equinor ASA has completed drilling an exploration well in the North Argentine basin and classified it as dry.

Equinor ASA has completed drilling an exploration well in the North Argentine basin (CAN) and classified it as dry. While the geological model was confirmed, no clear indications of hydrocarbons were found, the company said.

Argerich I was the first ultra-deep well drilled off the coast of Buenos Aires province (OGJ Online, Feb. 16, 2024).

Despite the result, Equinor calls drilling of the well a milestone. “This well, together with the seismic acquisition campaigns in the North Argentina basin and the Austral and West Malvinas basins, represents an important offshore exploration campaign in the country,” the company said.

Over the coming months, data collected will be analyzed to gain a greater understanding of the hydrocarbon potential in the areas.

Equinor is operator of CAN 100 block with 35% interest. Partners are YPF (35%) and Shell (30%) (OGJ Online, Jan. 14, 2021).
