Karoon to drill control well on Neon oil discovery offshore Brazil
April 1, 2022
Karoon Energy Ltd., Melbourne, committed to drill a control well on its Neon oil discovery in the Santos basin about 200 km offshore Sao Paulo, Brazil, with the possibility of a second well.
The Neon light oil (39 degrees API) discovery was drilled by the Echidna-1 wildcat in licence BM-S-1037 in May 2015 when a production test flowed 4,650 b/d with the flow constrained by testing equipment. The discovery was renamed Neon soon afterwards.
The decision to drill the new well, to be known internally as Echidna-2, is based on pre-development studies which point to a potential commercial project, Karoon said.
The follow-up control well, if drilled, will be Echidna-3.
Neon is 50-60 km northeast of the 100%-owned producing Baúna field and lies in water depths of around 300 m.
Subject to receiving environmental permissions, Neon drilling will take place at the conclusion of the current Patola development program.
The Patola oil discovery is expected to be developed via two vertical wells and a tie-back to the Baúna FPSO.
