Air Products to build Louisiana blue hydrogen plant, CCS system
Air Products & Chemicals Inc. is developing a 750-MMscfd blue hydrogen complex near Burnside, Ascension Parish, La. The complex will also sequester more than 5 million tonnes/year of carbon dioxide, in what the company describes as the world’s largest permanent carbon dioxide sequestration project to date. The project is expected to be operational in 2026.
Blue hydrogen manufacturing uses hydrocarbons as a feedstock, with carbon dioxide from the production process captured for permanent sequestration. About 95% of the carbon dioxide generated at the Air Products plant will be captured, compressed, and transported by pipeline to inland sequestration sites along a pipeline corridor extending 35 miles east of the complex, the company said.
Air Products has received approval from Louisiana’s State Mineral and Energy Board for permanent sequestration of the carbon dioxide in geologic pore space about a mile below ground. The complex will cost $4.5 billion.
