Navigator CO2 Ventures LLC has successfully concluded a non-binding open season for its carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) pipeline system, expanding its planned capacity to 12 million tonnes/year (tpy) from 8 million. The proposed CCS project would use 1,200 miles of pipe to provide biorefineries and other industrial participants across five Midwest states an avenue through which to capture and transport CO2 to a permanent sequestration site.
Based on the open season’s results, Navigator is looking to expand the pipeline’s capacity and proceed with multiple sequestration sites. Navigator expects the CCS project to begin operations in phases starting in late 2024.
The company has partnered with BlackRock Global Energy & Power Infrastructure Fund to develop the CCS in Nebraska, Iowa, South Dakota, Minnesota, and Illinois. Valero Energy Corp. is the anchor customer. The partners were initially planning to develop a 5-million tpy system, expandable to 8 million (OGJ Online, Mar. 16, 2021).
Navigator will use information received during the non-binding open season to continue working with interested shippers on binding commercial agreements. The framework of these agreements will form the basis of a binding open season, expected imminently.
