Baker Hughes: US drilling rig count jumps to 1,754
The US drilling rig count gained 12 units to reach 1,754 rigs working during the week ended Nov. 8, Baker Hughes Inc. reported.
A 13-unit rise in land-based rigs to 1,679 was nicked by a 1-unit loss in rigs drilling offshore to 58. Rigs drilling in inland waters were unchanged from a week ago at 17.
Oil rigs picked up 7 units to 1,383 while gas rigs tallied 5 units to 365. Unchanged from a week ago were rigs considered unclassified at 6.
Horizontal drilling rigs added 10 units to reach a total of 1,114. Directional drilling rigs, on the other hand, gave up 7 units to 223.
In Canada, a 16-unit drop compared with a week ago brought its total to 378 rigs working. Oil rigs relinquished 12 units to 221 while gas rigs lost 4 units to 157. Canada has 8 more rigs working compared with this week last year.
Major states, basins
A quiet week in the major oil- and gas-producing states and basins was headlined by Texas, which for the second consecutive week reported the largest spike, claiming 13 more units to bring its total to 834. New Mexico counted 6 more units to reach a total of 80. With a 1-unit gain to 106, Louisiana was the only other state to report an increase. Unchanged from a week ago were North Dakota at 163, Colorado at 70, Pennsylvania at 56, Wyoming at 55, California at 42, Ohio at 34, West Virginia at 31, Utah at 28, Kansas at 25, and Arkansas at 12. Alaska with a 1-unit loss to 9 and Oklahoma with a 4-unit subtraction to 172 were the only states to report a loss.
Noteworthy changes among the major US basins included an 18-unit jump in the Permian to 469 and a 2-unit decline in the Haynesville to 40.
