Pearsall Partners, of which Petro-Hunt Corp., Dallas, is managing partner, has completed an oil well in Pearsall field of Frio County, Tex., with two horizontal legs producing oil from Cretaceous Austin chalk.

The partnership's 1 McDermand, about 4 miles west of Dilley, had an initial potential flow of 2,291 b/d of oil and 1.65 MMcfd of gas.

The well produces from horizontal drainholes with a combined length of about 5,700 ft drilled in opposite directions from a vertical hole. The legs were drilled without a whipstock or kickoff plug.

Jim McGowen, Petro-Hunt vice-president, said, "We were constrained by lease lines, and the dual drainhole approach used by Charles Rigdon, our chief engineer, was the only practical way to get the length of drainhole we wanted and control necessary to stay within field rules."

Pearsall Partners' first operated well in Frio County, 1 Carnes, has produced about 85,000 bbl of oil from Austin chalk since completion in March 1990.

Initial completion rate was 816 b/d of oil, and the well continues to flow through a 3,000 ft horizontal leg.

Pearsall Partners has completed three other wells and is drilling a fifth on the 2,750 acre Carnes lease, which has room for eight wells.

Bruce Hunt, Petro-Hunt president, said, "These wells are capable of much higher flow rates, but we aren't trying to set any records.

"We just want to produce them at a pace so they will have a long life and high recovery."

Other working interest owners in the wells are GLG Energy LP, Austin, and WCS Oil & Gas Corp., Dallas.

Elsewhere in Frio County, GLG and WCS each operate wells in which Pearsall Partners owns an interest.
